Adopting an animal is a great way to give back to the community and provide a loving, stable home for a furry friend. June is ‘Adopt a Shelter Cat Month’ which could be the right time for you to adopt a feline ‘furry’ friend. Make sure you’re ready to be a pet owner, especially a cat owner. Remember, cats are not dogs. They’re more independent but still offer lots of unconditional love.

I adopted my cat Benny from Mixed Up Mutts in Arizona. Benny was at the Chandler, Arizona PetSmart. I along with the PetSmart adoption staff was surprised he wasn’t adopted straightaway because he was a kitten; he was three months old when I adopted him. Perhaps he was waiting for me to adopt him. He’s now three-years-old and a happy cat.

Tip: If you’re not home all of the time, you may want to adopt an older cat (1-year-old or older) versus a kitten because they’re just like a newborn baby. They need lots of attention

I adopted my cat CeCe from The Arizona Humane Society. Ironically, she came to shelter on my birthday August 5, and I adopted her a few days later. I guess it was meant to be. CeCe was one year and a few months. She immediately warmed up to me, and I knew she was the cat for me. CeCe turned three-years-old in April and is happy too and is more independent than Benny.

Animal shelters are filled with loving cats, dogs, gerbils, etc. who need and want a loving home. There’s no reason to buy a pet from a pet store or breeder. In fact, you could find a ‘pure breed’ dog or cat an animal shelter. I was amazed by the amount of pure bred dogs and cats at The Arizona Humane Society. Instead of paying a breeder $500 or more dollars, you could adopt a pure bred puppy or dog for $150 or less. Also, animal shelters will hold adopt-a-thons and other events where you can adopt a pet for a nominal cost. It’s a win-win situation!

Benny and CeCe are my “fur kids,” and I couldn’t be happier.
